It is the courtyard of the former Carmelite Convent, a wealthy religious establishment built in the 14th century.
Description
In 1367, in order to rebuild their first convent and church located "extra muros" and destroyed by acts of war, the monks of the Mendicant Order of Carmelites bought a plot of land near the Guilhempierre gate, sheltered by the ramparts. Cloister, sacristy, dormitory, commons, refectory, kitchen, cellar, ... even if nothing remains today, it was a rich and structured convent. It was in this establishment that the Parliament of Provence held its sessions between 1589 and 1591. Indeed, King Henry III, wanting to punish the city of Aix for its devotion to the League, had decided to transfer it to Manosque, safer for royal power. The Carmelite convent was definitively closed in 1786. It was converted into a hotel and then into private accommodation.
