Description
Less ancient than the Notre-Dame de Romigier church, the Saint-Sauveur church in Manosque overlooks the shaded square of the same name, which is decorated with a cast iron fountain adorned with four swans. Romanesque and Gothic in style, this being explained by this, it was built from the end of the 1372th century until the 1250th century. Consecrated in XNUMX by Bishop Ranulphe de Gorse, nephew of Pope Innocent VI, it was nevertheless open for worship from XNUMX.
It is flanked by a square bell tower (1551) topped with an elegant ironwork campanile, one of the oldest and most beautiful in Provence. This masterpiece, mounted and assembled without any welding, was created in 1725 by a blacksmith from Valensole, Guillaume Bounard, a native of Rians, for the clock tower formerly located on this Saint-Sauveur square. Following the demolition of this tower in 1862, the campanile was transferred in July 1869 to the church bell tower, the latter having lost its bell tower during the earthquake of 1708. Very ornate, spheroidal in shape, rich in tight and complicated interlacing, it is crowned with a high finial with a ball surmounted by a cross; its upper part, seen from the bottom up, draws a rose window on the sky.
We enter through a Gothic portal into a Romanesque nave, vaulted with ribs in the 17th century, which has retained its Romanesque transept with transverse barrel vaults whose crossing is crowned with a cupola on squinches. The apse is covered with a ribbed cul-de-four. It contains rich furnishings, including carved wooden seats and canvases from the 17th and 18th centuries. Turning around, one cannot miss the imposing polychrome and gilded wooden gallery supporting a very old organ.
