Description
A Romanesque gem rooted in the history of Digne-les-Bains
Mentioned as early as 1180, Notre-Dame du Bourg is one of the oldest and most beautiful Romanesque churches in Provence, with its unique barrel-vaulted nave and four majestic bays. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1840, it bears witness to 2 years of continuous occupation.
Built at the end of the 12th century, it stands on the remains of a 5th-century basilica, itself located on a former pagan necropolis, a unique fact in Provence. Abandoned by the population in the 10th century in favor of the upper town, the isolated cathedral suffered looting and damage. For a long time, it was used only for funerals, until its revival.
Restored in the 1980s and 1990s, it regained its splendor thanks to the architect Francesco Flavigny. Today, it houses an archaeological crypt, wall paintings from 1480, and a contemporary liturgical ensemble designed by David Rabinowitch.
Reverted to a cathedral in 1996, it invites you on a journey through time, between spirituality, art and memory.
