Saint-Jérôme underwent numerous developments until its current appearance, in neo-Gothic style, dating from the 1962th century. Enlarged and embellished, it was erected as a co-cathedral in XNUMX and classified as a Historic Monument.

Description

A cathedral built on the heights of Digne

In the 15th century, faced with insecurity, the inhabitants of Digne gathered around the bishop's castle on Rochas. It was there that Bishop Antoine de Guiramand had a new church dedicated to Saint Jerome built between 1490 and 1500.

In 1591, during the Wars of Religion, cathedral worship was transferred here, as the old cathedral was under threat. Enlarged in the 17th and 19th centuries, the church gradually established itself as the religious heart of the city: the nave was lengthened, chapels were added, and an impressive neo-Gothic façade was built.

Inside :
– Three stained glass windows (1855) illustrate the Passion of Christ, the life of the Virgin and that of Saint Jerome.
– The great Cavaillé-Coll organ (1865) makes the vaults vibrate.
– Beneath the high altar lies Mgr de Miollis, the inspiration for the character of the bishop in Victor Hugo's Les Misérables.

The bell tower, erected in 1619, houses the town bell.

On the tympanum, Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four evangelists welcomes you.

A parish church until 1996, Saint-Jérôme remains a major landmark in the Digne landscape, witness to five centuries of history.
