Plaque on Louis Denis Valverane, local figure.
The objective is to discover or rediscover the Provençal identity of the city, a Mistralian city.
Description
Louis Denis-Valvérane was a Provençal painter and illustrator, born on September 20, 1870 in Manosque and died on April 11, 1943 in Tarascon.
Louis Denis-Valvérane was an early supporter of the Provençal renaissance launched by Frédéric Mistral and the Félibrige movement. He studied painting in Paris and took part in the Provençal federalist movement of the 1890s, where he worked with Charles Maurras. From 1901 onwards, he exhibited regularly in painting salons. He also established himself as a draftsman and engraver. In 1925, he was awarded the silver medal by the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1936, he published a book of memoirs centered around the figure of Mistral, Lou Maianen. He died in 1943, but remains one of the most engaging Provençal painters of his time and a privileged witness to the Félibrige adventure.
