There is no “lion” on the Lions Fountain! This name comes from the family who ran an inn on the square, and it is pronounced the final "s" of "Lions".

Description

The fountain dates from the 17th century, a time when a desire for beautification seized the important cities and concentrated particularly on fountains. On the central bulb, four masks represent angels who seem to blow water, as essential to life as air.

In addition to this decorative aspect, the fountain mainly served the needs of the inhabitants of the city within the ramparts, of which the square was the center. It was then called "Place aux Herbes" because it was here that vegetables were sold on market days.
