In the harsh landscapes at an altitude of 1200 meters, the village of Authon was built around its church. Its "sanctuary of respite," the Sainte Marte chapel, was the site of many miracles.

Description

Nestled in the Monges massif, the village of Authon exudes plenitude and serenity. With its rugged terrain and history, it is one of the emblematic villages of the Haute-Provence Geopark.

Authon (1,137 m) is nestled in a remarkable natural setting. The beauty of the landscapes and the calm that emanates from it invite rest and contemplation but also the practice of outdoor activities. From the village, you can admire the surrounding peaks - Costebelle, Jouère, the Clot des Martres... - and if you feel like it, set off to conquer them for a change of atmosphere and scenery. You will discover the pastoral spaces used since the Middle Ages. Authon, once under the control of the Abbey of Saint-Victor of Marseille and then of the Templars and the Hospitallers, was in fact a stopover, from Sisteron or Thoard, on the transhumance routes.
Deeply affected by the rural exodus, Authon has regained its dynamism and the village has benefited from a real renovation effort in recent years. The town is also home to a Sentinel by Andy Goldsworthy.
