Oppedette, a jewel perched at the gateway to the Calavon gorges
This picturesque village captivates visitors with its wild natural setting, rich heritage, and hiking trails offering breathtaking panoramas. A place of history and escape.

Description

Nestled at an altitude of 525 meters on a rocky promontory, Oppedette is a picturesque village overlooking the spectacular Calavon Gorges. This remarkable natural site, sculpted by flowing water, offers a wild setting where multicolored cliffs, caves, and natural bridges follow one another.

Hiking enthusiasts will find a veritable exploration area here, with the GR 4 and GR 6 trails crossing above the canyon. The village's belvedere offers a breathtaking view of the gorge, with an impressive 150-meter drop.

Just a few kilometers from Simiane-la-Rotonde and Vachères, Oppedette charms with its authentic charm. Its architectural heritage bears witness to its history: the Saint-Didier church, built in 1834, the remarkable presbytery, an old fountain, a mill, and narrow streets lined with characterful houses. Two oratories, dedicated to Saint-Joseph and Saint-André, mark the surrounding roads.

The village also has a unique war memorial, located near the old Calvary, from which a votive stone to the god Mars was moved and embedded in the facade of the church.

Finally, the Calavon gorges preserve a particular memory: they once hosted clandestine Protestant assemblies, and you can still see seats and a pulpit carved into the rock.

Between grandiose nature and historical heritage, Oppedette is an invitation to discovery and contemplation.
