Tower of the southern front of the city wall, rebuilt in the 1370s, during the reconstruction of the wall by the Community of Inhabitants in the context of the Hundred Years' War.
It is classified as a Historic Monument by the 1875 list.
Description
The origin of its name "Mau Disenço" or curse is unknown.
This tower has retained its machicolation consoles, its creeping stone staircase on level 3 and its six crossbows, distributed over the first two levels. Those on level 1 have been adapted as arquebusiers since the Wars of Religion (c. 1562). The gorge, or flat face on the city side, is opened by three large superimposed arches. Between this tower and the gendarmerie tower stood the city gate known as "de Provence", in the form of a square tower, destroyed in 1850.
An integral part of the defensive system developed by the people of Sisteron to protect themselves from the bands of looters who infested Provence, it resisted numerous pressures, notably from those who, seeing it as a symbol of feudalism, wanted its demolition.
