5 towers, 3 gates, sections of ramparts erected along the Durance as well as the remains of a monumental gate are the main witnesses of the ancient fortifications erected around the old town of Sisteron in the 14th century.
Description
The towers of the Fort, the Gens d'Armes, the Médisance, Notre Dame and the Collège, classified as Historic Monuments in 1875, take their names from nearby buildings or from real and legendary events.
The Nière and Fonts-Chaudes gates protect the two main entrances to the Bourg Reynaud district (part of the old town along the Durance).
At the northern entrance to the city, the Porte de l'Escourche stands alongside the remains of the imposing old Porte du Dauphiné (destroyed during the Bombing of 1944).
