Fort Vauban which overlooks Seyne bears witness to the history of the valley since the 17th century.

Description

The Vauban Citadel of Seyne bears witness to the valley's history since the 17th century. It also offers a superb panorama of the Blanche mountain range and this Alpine valley.

The citadel itself was built in 1693. The kingdom was then threatened by neighboring Savoy, and Seyne was a border town. Louis XIV sent Niquet and then Vauban to the site. The former had a large basement wall built along the circuit of the great tower and a drawbridge. Vauban then took stock of the threat and the terrain and began construction of the fort. You will discover all this history on site with real cannons, the impressive cistern and its stalactites, the old bread oven, films, and exhibitions. You will also find the work "The Keep of the Sleeping Bear" by the American artist Mark Dion and a temporary exhibition on the writer Jean Proal (free access).
The Citadel is open year-round for self-guided or group visits. The Fort et Patrimoine du Pays de Seyne association also offers guided tours. Don't miss the Citadel Escape Game, a life-size 180m² game in the fort's underground passages, one of the largest escape game areas.
