Located along an ancient road, Valensole is one of the largest communes in France! Its 800 km² plateau makes it the "breadbasket of the region" thanks to the cultivation of lavender, cereals, almond trees, olive trees, and truffles.
Description
The Valensole Plateau is known worldwide for its expanses of blue composed of lavender fields as far as the eye can see. Its unique soil, composed of a mixture of puddingstone, clay, and marl, forms the "Valensole complex," beloved by geologists. Meadows, garrigue, maquis, woods, and almond trees make up this plateau.
This commune is perched on a small hill, on the side of the valley where the Notre Dame ravine flows, along an ancient road, probably pre-Roman, which connects Apt to Riez. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the simplest route to reach the Alps from Lower Provence. This "main road" was used for transhumance.
The parish church of Saint Blaise overlooks the houses. The medieval porch of the Deanery Courtyard will allow you to discover a nearby well. Also worth a visit: St. Mayeul Chapel.
