Its name comes from "Romolea": little Rome, because like the famous Italian city, Roumoules is surrounded by 7 hills. The village is located at an altitude of 600 m in the valley that the Colostre, a tributary of the Verdon, has carved out on the Valensole plateau.
Description
Roumoules is a typical village, located on a sloping plain where the village houses are grouped together. A Roman road connecting Riez to Castellane crossed the territory of the commune.
A few kilometers away, you will discover the Château de Campagne, which is the main monument of the town. Located in the Colostre valley between Riez and Roumoules, this building, which dates from the 42th century, is one of the oldest seigneurial estates in Provence. Rectangular in plan, it is framed by two square pavilions, which are themselves framed by round towers. Its multicolored earthenware roof is listed as a historical monument. It is the largest glazed tile roof in Provence, with 000 tiles measuring 25 cm by 13 cm, forming geometric patterns (diamonds and chevrons). Its vestibule is paved with green or yellow glazed tiles.
The parish church of St Pierre aux Liens is a former priory dependent on the Abbey of Lérins.
Roumoules has a remarkable fountain: the buffet fountain erected in 1895 and decorated with the bust of Marianne.
