A structure on the Ubaye Maginot Line, the Roche-la-Croix site is a complex of stone masonry (19th century) and reinforced concrete (20th century) which bears witness to a relentless arms race.
Description
Alpine Maginot Line Bastion
At an altitude of 2100 m, Roche-la-Croix embodies the evolution of military architecture, between 1884th-century masonry and the concrete of the Maginot Line. Built between 1889 and 1931, then reinforced between 1936 and XNUMX, this strategic site blocks access to the Col de Larche.
Hidden beneath the mountain, the Maginot fort still retains its combat blocks, its power station, and its retractable turret. It testified to the firepower of its 161 men.
A fascinating place, between technical prowess and Alpine defensive memory.
