Located in the heart of the old center of Castellane, in rue Saint Victor, the Saint-Victor church is an exceptional building dating from the 1990th century. Several restoration campaigns since the XNUMXs have restored it to its former glory.
Description
The construction of the original building dates back to the first half of the 13th century.
The first element that seems to be recognized by all historians is the place of construction and the owner of the land: the church was built on land given in the 11th century to the Saint-Victor abbey.
The history of the building is then divided into two main periods: in the 15th century when a first aisle was built to the north as well as the bell tower, then in the third quarter of the 18th century when the building was again enlarged to the north by the erection of a second aisle.
This Victorine priory also acquired parish status in 1260, the date of the transfer of the parish of Saint-André to Saint-Victor. In 1442, the parish office was also transferred from Notre-Dame-du-Plan to Saint-Victor, which then became the only parish church in Castellane. It remained so until the construction of the Sacré-Coeur church and its erection as a parish church in 1884.
In 2014, a major restoration campaign of the building was carried out.
From the Roc, the bell tower of the Saint Victor church seems to dominate the city. This church is a building worth visiting without delay.
