North of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, 1km north of Puimoisson, Saint-Jurs is the highest village on the Valensole plateau.
Perched on a peak and clinging to the Montdenier mountain, you will appreciate its traditional character and architecture.
Description
Saint-Jurs was a prosperous village in the 19th century thanks to its plaster production. Five gypsum mines were then in full production. Today all the mills and ovens in the village are in ruins. The commune of Saint-Jurs, with the help of the Regain association, is undertaking the rehabilitation of the Lapelouse plasterworks site, to retrace the ancient plaster cycle.
In Saint-Jurs you will find:
• The chapel of the Saint Georges cemetery: it is the oldest monument in Saint-Jurs. Attributed to the 1793th century, devastated in 1851, the chapel was restored in 1980 and XNUMX.
• The Saint Georges church is worth a detour. Its construction was done in two stages: one Roman, which is at the end of the XNUMXth century, the second of Gothic type, being at the end of the XNUMXth century.
• The castle. It is a large rectangular building built on the rock, close to the church. Its construction according to Mr. R. Collier, would date from the XNUMXth century
