This medieval castle is part of the network of fortified buildings that monitor and protect the Durance Valley between Sisteron and Tallard. An interactive terminal in the village will tell you all about this castle. This is a private castle, not open to the public.
Description
The origins of its construction are obscure, but it was from the 11th century that most castles of this type appeared in the region.
It is a military building that consists of imposing defensive elements and is capable of resisting a long siege, as evidenced by the importance of the cistern.
Situated on a rocky spur, the site gradually developed from the Roman period until the end of the Middle Ages.
Originally, there was only a simple tower. Later, starting from a first level with a barrel vault, the building was raised. The fact that this vault is not anchored in the walls of the adjoining building, but stuck against it, suggests that the vault dates from this period.
To the south, a door provides access to the first room. This opening was made through the vault and is therefore later than it. On the second level, the current rectangular space was originally divided by a partition wall that can still be seen in the eastern wall. A large fireplace was located to the left of the partition wall. Various doors opened eastward onto another building that no longer exists. This building rose over four levels.
