On the right bank of the Bès there was a district called Le Villar made up of three hamlets: Bas and Haut Villar and Le Moulin.

Description

The latter is already cited during the survey of 1252. But is also cited ''Vilar'' where the lord owns land. This toponym refers to a High Middle Ages habitat destroyed during the unrest of the XNUMXth century. Once peace returned, the survivors abandoned these habitats to found a new village: ''le Bas-Vernet'', which would become the most important hamlet in the commune.
The parish church dedicated to Saint Martha, built in the middle of the 17th century, is located to the south of the village and is accompanied by the cemetery.
The cult of Saint Martha, sister of Mary Magdalene, according to the Gospel, was born after 1187, when, following the legend of the Tarasque, a tomb was sought and found in the Camargue containing bones attributed to her. Ten years later, a church was built in Tarascon in her honor where her relics were deposited and her cult spread first to Provence and then to the rest of Christianity.
