A museum that tells the story of Man in Provence.
Designed by architect Norman Foster, the Verdon Gorges Prehistory Museum presents archaeological objects from around 60 sites in Haute-Provence and Verdon to the public.

Description

The Verdon Gorges Prehistory Museum presents the adventures of early humans in Provence over the past million years. The permanent exhibition alternates between scenes from prehistoric life, archaeological objects from Haute-Provence and the Verdon, and multimedia materials.
At the entrance to the museum, a mammoth, a woolly rhinoceros, a reindeer, a megaloceros and a saber-toothed tiger welcome visitors.

Until December 15, 2024, the Museum of Prehistory is hosting two temporary exhibitions:
- "Neolithic Idols in Provence" which will reveal the secrets of these superb limestone sculptures.

You can admire stylized human representations that evoke a distant era, between 3 and 900 BC. These enigmatic works, probably funerary steles, were once implanted in the ground to honor and mark the repose of the ashes of the deceased. Their barely perceptible faces give way to geometric patterns that symbolize hair or a headdress, thus highlighting the artistic ingenuity of this Neolithic period.

The sculptures, embellished with red ochre or cinnabar, reveal a stunning palette of colors that adds a vibrant dimension to these ancient artifacts.

- "Come out of your reserve!" the 40th anniversary of the Haute-Provence Geological Reserve
It presents its missions of protection, study and promotion of the geological heritage, particularly spectacular in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Above all, it is the opportunity to introduce you to its major discoveries: the ammonite slab, the ichthyosaurs and other plesiosaurs. An exhibition that then invites you to walk the hiking trails to discover the fossils on site! these artistic treasures.

A family orienteering race to discover the Prehistosite:
Using the leaflet available free of charge at the Museum reception, take part in this fun and informative orienteering race which will take you straight to the reconstructed prehistoric village.
Travel back in time along the trail, searching for the different stages of prehistory to discover the hidden word. Once completed and dropped in the mailbox at the Museum entrance, you can enter the monthly draw to win the monthly gift.

Accompanied by a museum guide, you can learn how to make a fire without matches, try your hand at archery, or even throw an assegai with a spear thrower. These activities are perfect for groups or families, and are suitable for both children and adults!
