Salagon Priory — A medieval gem in Haute-Provence
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Salagon Priory, in Mane near Forcalquier, is a treasure of Provençal heritage.
A site steeped in history
This vast complex of 50x30 m includes a XNUMXth century Romanesque church, a XNUMXth century priory, agricultural outbuildings, and is built around cobbled courtyards protected by high walls.
The site reveals 2000 years of occupation, from the Neolithic period to medieval monastic life.
The Romanesque church
Built in limestone, it reveals a refined decor: barrel vaults, sculpted capitals, rose windows, and animal and human bas-reliefs.
Inside, admire a rare 15th-century mural, as well as a luminous series of contemporary stained-glass windows by Aurélie Nemours, bathing the nave in an intense red light.
The priory lodge
Magnificently restored, it retains a Romanesque hall, a square tower, and a facade with mullioned windows. Formerly the home of Benedictine monks, it has been enriched over the centuries.
The museum and gardens
The museum traces rural life in Haute-Provence through collections of objects, tools and agricultural traditions.
The priory gardens are a true haven of peace, mixing medicinal and aromatic plants cultivated according to ancient practices, offering a lively and sensory setting for the visit.
Remains and agricultural areas
Also discover sarcophagi, Gallo-Roman remains, as well as the old outbuildings transformed into exhibition and educational spaces.
A place where history, nature and culture meet for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Provence.
