The museum presents the exploitation of the lignite basin of the Alpes de Haute Provence between 1874 and 1949. Free entry.
Description
Stories from former miners, photographs and objects tell the story of the mining era (1817-1949) and allow visitors to discover working conditions and union organisation, as well as daily life in the workers' town and surrounding villages.
The geological aspect is addressed through the history of each mining operation.

The mining site of the Saint-Maime mine was spread over 3 squares: Le Bois d'Asson, Le Collet Rouge, Le Puits Neuf (or Puits du Foulon).
It was a deposit of lignite, an immature coal that has fewer calories than hard coal.
Today, we can still see the industrial wastelands linked to mining: slag heaps, industrial architecture, a false headframe erected in 2003 in place of the original, dismantled after the mine closed in 1949...
The Œuvre au Noir association in Saint-Maime has been working since 1985 to preserve the memory of industrial activity and the daily lives of the population. The association is at the heart of the museum project, which was launched in 2000.
She has published several works on the subject:
- Bois d'Asson, memory of a mine in Haute Provence (1986, reissued in 2013)
- The Mine Album (1990)
- Contribution to the memory of the mine (2000)
- From night to light (2002)
- Mine de Bois d'Asson - The last voice - Tribute to Pierre NUCHO (2017)
