MoreHistoric village in the heart of the Verdon
Nestled between the Verdon Gorges and the lavender fields of the Valensole Plateau, Riez is one of the oldest villages in Provence. This characterful town will charm you with its rich Gallo-Roman heritage, medieval atmosphere, and Provençal way of life. Between traditional markets, rural festivals, and picturesque alleyways, discover this unique village.
In the heart of the Valensole Plateau, Riez is built on the side of the Saint-Maxime hill, which overlooks the confluence of three valleys. These valleys have been used as communication routes since the High Roman Empire. At this crossroads of the roads from Aix and Fréjus, Emperor Augustus founded the colony under Latin law: Colonia Julia Augusta Reiorum Appolinaris.
Four monolithic granite columns topped with a sculpted architrave constitute the remains of a temple erected in the 1st century AD.. On the ruins of Roman baths, a baptistery and a cathedral were built during the 5th century. The baptistery thus remains one of the rare early Christian buildings in Provence. Its function as a bishopric then made Riez an important city.
Later, in the 14th century, ramparts surrounded the cityThey were built with local materials: pebbles and river sand. These ramparts can still be admired, notably the two gates which provide access to the old town (Sanson and Ayguière gates) as well as the Corner Tower (Clock Tower)..
Inside the old town, a medieval atmosphere pervades the Grand'rue. Its narrow streets are connected by "andrones" (covered passages under the houses). Its old mansions are from the Renaissance period, notably the Hôtel de Mazan.

Gypsum, the local plaster stone, is more than a material: it is the living link between geology, craftsmanship and regional heritage. Riez is famous for its gypseries, these sculpted plaster decorations applied to facades, fireplaces, ceilings or staircasesThe Hôtel de Mazan and its staircase date from 1523 with plasterwork decorations.
