MoreSaint-Martin-de-Bromes
Saint-Martin-de-Brômes is a village in the Verdon at the foot of the Valensole plateau. Jean Giono was right when he nicknamed Saint-Martin-de-Brômes "the curled up fox." The village is located at an altitude of 360 m. It stretches at the foot of the Castelleras hill, at the confluence of the Colostre and Pontet rivers. It is overlooked by the clock tower and the Saint-Martin church. To get there, you have to follow the Colostre gorges, which offer magnificent landscapes.
The Gallo-Roman presence is attested by the discovery of oppidums and a milestone dating from the time of Emperor Carus. Saint-Martin was for a long time a fief of the Castellane family.
The Saint-Martin church, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is listed as a Historic Monument. It owes its uniqueness to the magnificent murals by Esprit Michel Gibelin, a student of Cézanne, depicting the life of Saint Martin.
Boniface de Castellane had the clock tower built in the 13th century. It is a watchtower overlooking the Colostre Valley. It was also used to store the seigneurial tax.
As for the museum, it is one of the smallest in France. Located on the ground floor of the tower, it houses in particular the milestone and a Gallo-Roman sarcophagus from the 4th century..
