Description

La Motte-du-Caire, a village between history and nature

Nestled in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, La Motte-du-Caire is a village with a rich and fascinating heritage. Its name, mentioned as early as 1168 as "La Mota," evokes a motte-and-bailey castle, a fortified hill characteristic of the Middle Ages, testifying to its historical importance.

A remarkable architectural heritage
The parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, built in 1851, stands elegantly in the heart of the village. It replaced an older building dating from 1599, although it retains its bell tower, erected in 1785. The latter, with its pyramid and four pyramidions, is an iconic landmark in the local landscape. The interior of the church houses a precious XNUMXth-century Deposition from the Cross, listed as a historic monument.

The village also saw the establishment of a convent of the Trinitarian order, founded in 1498. Today, although the buildings have partially disappeared, a house decorated with a door frame dated 1682, marked with a Maltese cross, still recalls the presence of this religious community.

A village with timeless charm
Strolling through the steep streets of La Motte-du-Caire, such as the famous Rue Casse-Cul, is like stepping back in time. The old houses with their traditional facades tell the story of the village's rural and artisanal past, preserving its Provençal authenticity intact.

The war memorial, adorned with bronze statues of mourners, adds an artistic and solemn touch to the village's heritage, honoring the memory of past generations.

A playground for nature lovers
Surrounded by unspoiled landscapes, La Motte-du-Caire is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Numerous hiking trails allow you to discover the diversity of alpine panoramas and enjoy the bountiful nature. Mountain bike enthusiasts will also find trails suitable for all levels.

Thanks to its ideal climatic and topographical conditions, the village is also a popular destination for paragliding and hang gliding. From the heights, thrill-seekers can admire an exceptional panorama of the Sasse Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Authentic gastronomy
The terroir of La Motte-du-Caire can also be discovered through its local gastronomy. The region's markets are full of authentic flavors: mountain honey, goat cheese, artisanal charcuterie, and other Provençal delicacies delight gourmets.

A place where it is good to stop
Between medieval heritage, unspoiled nature, and the Provençal way of life, La Motte-du-Caire appeals to history buffs and lovers of the great outdoors alike. Whether for a rejuvenating break, a sporting adventure, or an immersion in local traditions, this village embodies a true haven of peace in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
