The village, which is home to numerous places of remembrance (permanent exhibition dedicated to the Harkis) is dominated by the original site of Vière where you can admire the restored remains of the Romanesque church of Saint-Barthélémy and the abandoned medieval village.
Description
In the central hamlet, the Ongles History and Memory House (MHeMO) was created, which houses the permanent exhibition entitled "They arrive tomorrow...", telling the story of around twenty harkis families who arrived in the village on September 6, 1962.
On the hill of Vière, lies the primitive medieval village. The Romanesque church (1835th and XNUMXth centuries) of Saint-Barthélemy was devastated during the Wars of Religion, restored at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, then definitively ruined and abandoned in the XNUMXth century (XNUMX). This site of the medieval village dominates the current village. A recent intervention has allowed the commune to preserve and fix the imposing ruins of this medieval building. This large-scale project still includes phases of implementation to fully finalize the enhancement of the site.
Around the church of Vière, buried under vegetation, some traces of the original village remain; old streets, substructures, etc. Restoration project in progress.
In the current village, the castle was built in 1670 by the Protestant lord of the time (Lignon family). It was sold in 1726 and enlarged by a chapel, installed in its vestibule (current parish church). It then became municipal property at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, it currently houses the MHeMO (The House of History and Memory of Ongles).
The village of Ongles also has several hamlets, the most important of which is Rocher, and its Romanesque church of Notre-Dame, (off-center) devastated during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt in the 17th century.
