Saint-Julien du Verdon, a 1500-year-old village... As early as the 5th century, monks from Lérins Abbey (off the coast of Cannes) built a small priory at the top of the current village. Their mission: to Christianize the region.
Description
They established contact with the Vergunni tribe who occupied the site on the banks of the Verdon. Thus a village was formed to which they gave the name of Saint-Julien, this holy martyr venerated by these abbots.
Notre-Dame Chapel:
A church was later built on this site. It was enlarged in the early 18th century and later named Notre-Dame de l'Assomption.
The plum dryer and the “pardigones”:
Below the chapel stands the plum dryer, recently restored according to tradition, with a plaster coating that once came from the gypsum quarries, now partially submerged. It dates from the second half of the 2th century. At that time, the banks of the Verdon stretched cereal fields and orchards, particularly plum trees. After the harvest, farmers dried these "pardigone" plums in individual granaries or dryers, before marketing them: this is the last witness to the importance of this production.
Saint-Roch Church:
At the end of the 19th century, due to the increase in population, Saint-Julien acquired a second church, built on the site of a sanctuary to Saint Roch and dedicated to this saint, who became the patron saint of the village. This is the current parish church.
The communal oven
The current oven, located a few meters below the square, dates from 1905, but must have existed long before. Families took turns baking bread there. Like the two wash houses, it was a place of community life. Currently, it is revived every year for Pentecost and on the occasion of the patronal feast or other festivities.
The lake:
It is named after Castillon, this submerged village, located 90 m deep, upstream from the dam.
The lake was first filled in 1948. The lake has transformed the economy of Saint-Julien. Agriculture has now been reduced in favor of tourism.
