This 7th and final stage of the Route Napoléon on horseback in the Alpes de Haute-Provence, labeled Grand Itinéraire Equestre, will allow you to discover the foothills of the Montagne de Lure and the town of Sisteron as well as its citadel.
Description
Reach the Volonne bridge. Cross the Durance and follow the route on the left bank up the river along the orchards. The route continues up the valley via paths and small roads on the plain. It reaches the village of Peipin, then climbs into the mountains following the GR653D (Way of St. James of Compostela). After a long climb to the last ridge of the Lure mountain, the route enters the Jabron valley. At the end of the descent, it crosses the river, climbs back up to the Thor plateau, and reaches the Molard hill overlooking Sisteron.

Delicate passages
This final stage of the Route Napoléon on horseback differs from the pedestrian route (GR®406) which is traced on the left bank of the Durance and has many tarmacked sections. On this route on the right bank, the course crosses a high point at Pas de Peipin (1 m) and crosses the road several times (caution).
