The Saint-Ours Haut fort was part of the Ubaye Maginot Line.
Ensuring the flanking of Roche-la-Croix, it blocked the road to the Col de Larche. A role that the two forts played perfectly in June 1940, before the Armistice.
Description
The underground force of the valley
Entirely carved into the rock, the Saint-Ours Haut fort is an impressive Maginot Line structure, designed to protect men and equipment from enemy fire. Only its combat blocks with their formidable armored bells emerge.
With its underground galleries, its barracks, its power station and its firing zones, it was decisive during the Italian offensive of June 1940. Thanks to its crossfire with Roche-la-Croix, it stopped the enemy on the border.
The largest completed structure in the valley, combining artillery and infantry, remains a powerful testament to military ingenuity in an Alpine environment.
