Luberon Regional Natural Park
In Haute-Provence, between nature and heritage
Between the Alps and the Vaucluse plain, the Luberon stretches its rounded silhouette and watches over Provence. This gently sloping massif shelters a mosaic of unspoiled landscapes, between limestone cliffs, oak forests, and fragrant scrubland. Each dry stone, each low wall testifies to the attachment of men to this vibrant and authentic land. The Luberon Regional Natural Park protects and enhances this territory.

A preserved territory with a rich past
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Luberon is a veritable open book on the history of man and nature. As early as the Neolithic period, the first inhabitants sheltered beneath its white rocks. While the Via Domitia, the oldest road in France, saw warriors, merchants, and travelers pass through. Even today, agricultural traditions persist with a variety of crops: orchards, cereals, and sheep farming.
Recognized as a Regional Natural Park in 1977, the Luberon covers 185 hectares and 000 municipalities, including 77 in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region. It works to preserve its landscapes and heritage through numerous initiatives. These include the rehabilitation of traditional trails and habitats, the protection of endangered species, and the promotion of local expertise.
A UNESCO Global Geopark
Since 2015, the Luberon Regional Natural Park has been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This prestigious label recognizes its commitment to the protection and enhancement of geological heritage, true witnesses to the Earth's history.
The region boasts sixty remarkable geosites, accessible to the public. They allow visitors to explore geological evolution and the links between humans and their environment. Among these must-see sites, the astonishing Mourres formations in Forcalquier reveal landscapes sculpted by time, while the Oppedette Gorges offer a deep canyon carved into limestone.
A Biosphere Reserve between Luberon and Lure
In 1997, the Park joined the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve network, a model territory where biodiversity conservation is combined with sustainable development. In 2010, its perimeter was extended to the Lure mountain, thus reinforcing the richness and ecological diversity of this protected area.
