The Lake Saint-Léger site Lake Saint-Léger site is known to geologists throughout France.

Description

Lake St Léger, which is more like a peat bog, is a Natura 2000 listed site. The ecological richness of the site is invaluable for both flora and fauna. You can notably find Lady's Slipper orchids, protected orchids, as well as other lesser-known plant species such as the Ferruginous Choin. An extremely rare mollusk, the Vertigo Angustior, also makes its home here. The little extra: water lilies in bloom in June/July on the lake... to look at without touching!

A discovery trail is available starting from the Montclar station (approximately 2 hours).
7 panels present the richness of the terroir of the La Blanche valley: the geology, the customs of the 19th century inhabitants (the lake, the lime kiln, the rabbit hutch), the presence of the Templars, the mysterious Druidic "sacrificial stone" carved with crosses and holes, the birds passing over the glacial lake...
It is also a fantastic site for birdwatching; you will find a post at the edge of the forest where you can observe the birds without disturbing them.

Still following the signs, you arrive at the chapel of Saint Léger. It was built in the 12th century by the Templars who guarded the pass at that time and ensured the safety of trade and travelers in these unsafe times.

This magical site offers a timeless break surrounded by magnificent nature. Discover the site's hidden past. Enjoy a stroll in the cool of the woods to glimpse the lake below with its incomparable flora and fauna.
