Formerly a dependency of the Abbey of Ile Barbe and then of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Until 1920, every Whit Monday, the inhabitants of Clamensane and Bayons made a pilgrimage to the chapel to venerate the saint and his relics.
Description
From the hilltop village of Clamensane, the hike to the Saint-Amand chapel promises you a superb view of one of the emblematic valleys of the Haute Provence Geopark.
The Saint-Amand chapel stands on an ancient site and overlooks the Sasse valley. The ridge on which it was built once marked the boundary between the Roman provinces and then the boundary between the archdioceses of Aix and Embrun. It is therefore possible and likely that the site of Saint-Amand was a guard post on the border, later Christianized.
You can access it from the charming village of Clamensane and enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley and its ancient orchards, its landscapes and its geology. The surroundings of the site are also characterized by the presence of one of the most beautiful stands of thuriferous juniper in the Alpes de Haute-Provence.
