Description
This lime kiln is located on a road leading from the village of Bras d'Asse to the hamlet of Oraisonis. It is a remarkable heritage site, both in its design and its size.
Until the Industrial Revolution, almost every village had at least one lime kiln or plaster kiln. The commune of Bras d'Asse alone had seven.
This oven is a rich testimony to the know-how of yesteryear. Its date of construction is unknown but it is quite neat; it could date from the time when the village descended from the heights of Vieux Bras to the current Bras d'Asse in the plain (from 1850).
Limestone is very abundant locally, particularly in the pebbles of the so-called Valensole formation into which the Asse valley is carved. When heated strongly, it becomes quicklime.
