Description
Gaubert and his church seem protected by the Cousson, the tutelary mountain of the Dignois region. Stretched on a sandstone ridge, the village offers a superb view of Digne and the surrounding countryside.
Gaubert was until the end of the 19th century. an independent commune and its history is very old. The slopes between the Cousson and the Bléone were in fact occupied since prehistory but it was in the Middle Ages that the village was structured, enclosed by its ramparts. The castle then stands at the top, with the church, dedicated to Saint-Etienne, and the residential houses at its feet. The whole will be greatly destroyed during the wars of religion.
The only parts still visible of the 11th century church. are those which were cut in the rock; we will notice the bases of the pillars and some burials. Subsequently, the organization of space evolved, the village stretching over the ridge and beyond; only a few vestiges of the ramparts remain.
At the entrance to the village, a small chapel adds to this heritage, it is dedicated to Saint-Sébastien.
