The Petra Castellana fortification is still clearly visible, particularly on its northern part, facing you. The fortification is believed to have encircled the entire site but there are no more explicit remains to the south.
Description
Archaeologists have traced the outline of the 245-meter-long wall, which consisted of a group of seven half-moon-shaped towers connected by a continuous wall called a curtain wall. The rampart has been carbon-dated and its construction dates back to the late 14th and early XNUMXth centuries.
The towers are massive and solid, without rooms inside, built with stones and mortar and covered with terracotta tiles. The rampart is pierced with several openings which are still visible. However, there is nothing to know whether there were slots. A walkway could run inside the fortification, at the top of the rampart.
