The Manosque icehouse probably dates from the 18th century. It is located in the Moulin Neuf district, on Chemin de Champ de Pruniers.

Description

Externally, only a building covered with earth as thermal insulation is visible. The interior is an 8-meter-deep circular tank dug underground, carefully smoothed and masonry. Its access door faces north to limit the entry of hot air during ice exploitation. The ice was produced naturally in winter and stored until the warm season.
These icehouses were built near water sources and a flat, hollow area called a frost pond. During the frost period, the basin was flooded, the water froze, and the collected ice was piled in the tank in successive layers separated by straw.
