Located on the right bank of the Durance River, Jean Giono's hometown is a land of art and culture. Full of charm, this ancient city boasts a rich past, where each era has left its mark and style.
Description
Between Mont d'Or and Toutes Aures, Manosque is located on a foothill of the Luberon hills, from which it overlooks the alluvial plain of the Durance. A cultural city, it comes alive throughout the year and offers wonderful discoveries: visits, exhibitions, shows, correspondence, festivals...
The Jean Giono Cultural and Literary Center will allow you to discover his many works and learn more about the writer's life.
The historic center, with its military architecture, will reveal its ancient ramparts and its many gates: the Porte Saunerie from the 14th century, the Porte Soubeyran from the 13th century, the Porte Guilhempierre. The religious heritage is rich with the Saint Sauveur and Notre Dame de Romigier churches as well as the Observantins and Presentation convents, not forgetting the St Pancrace Chapel which dominates the city on the Toutes Aures hill.
The old town centre has some very beautiful private mansions such as the Hôtel d'Herbès, a 17th-century style building, the Renaissance-style Town Hall and the Château de Gassaud.
In the hills of Manosque, "La Thomassine" will allow you to visit its conservatory orchard and the estate's gardens.
How can we talk about Manosque without mentioning L'Occitane en Provence? You can visit the factory to discover how these world-famous cosmetics are made, as well as the Museum and the Mediterranean garden, not to mention the adjoining boutique.
To better admire Manosque, climb the hill of Mont d'Or (3km round trip), to admire the beauty of the surrounding nature and a panoramic view of the Luberon, Sainte Baume, Haut-Var and even the pre-Alpine peaks.
