A small white dot clinging to the Robion mountain, the Saint-Trophime chapel is troglodyte. Accessible only on foot via a fairly steep hiking trail, the Saint-Trophime chapel offers a splendid view. It dates from the 18th century.
Description
The Saint-Trophime chapel is located at the foot of the bars of the Robion mountain. It is accessible by a steep path which starts at the hamlet of Petit Robion.
Built partly under the rocky overhanging corbel, it is rectangular in plan with a north-south orientation, given by the rock. The chapel consists of a single nave with a roof covering made up approximately half of the rock face, the other half being covered by a single-pitched roof of hollow tiles and hollow joint tiles. The east wall rests directly on the rock and the north facade follows the slope of the wall, using the latter to form the steps leading to the door. The visible walls of the chapel are entirely covered with lime plaster. The gable facade includes only a walnut door with a decorative effect created by large-headed nails and whose opening is in a semicircular arch, without a frame.
The interior of the chapel is lit by two narrow, semicircular bays on the east side. On the west side, a small stone masonry bench has been installed. The rock shelters a little active spring right next to it. A small square niche has been cut into the south wall. The floor of the chapel is made of rock and earth; the walls are covered with murals.
