Description
Belon Farm, a stronghold of the Resistance, is one of the seven Refuges imagined and created by Andy Goldsworthy, an internationally renowned artist.
Refuge d'Art is a single artwork designed by British artist Andy Goldsworthy in partnership with the Gassendi Museum and the Haute-Provence Geopark. This unique trail in Europe crosses 150 km of the Geopark's exceptional landscapes, uniquely combining contemporary art, hiking, and heritage. In each of these formerly abandoned and now restored sites (chapels, farms, jas, etc.), the artist created a specific work, which is now part of the building.
The hamlet of Belon housed a training school for Resistance leaders. During an attack in February 1944, the Germans killed or deported the young resistance fighters and burned the hamlet. The work with its 13 stone arches pays tribute to them.
The artist: "The ground floor has few windows and a low ceiling. It's the ideal atmosphere for building white stone arches: they will appear like architectural ghosts..."
