This tower is located at an altitude of 990 m on the northern edge of the commune of Melve, on a steep mountain range which provides natural protection and an optical connection.
Accessible by hiking from the village of Melve (40 minutes).

Description

Dating back to the 13th century, the Melve Tower was once part of a defensive system uniting 21 castles and watchtowers in the Hautes Terres de Provence. It is a stop on the Hautes-Terres route of the Haute-Provence Geopark.

The tower is located at an altitude of 900 m, on a steep relief that provided it with natural protection and a visual connection with the other sites. The remains still in place make it possible to reconstruct a rectangular keep of approximately 70 m², which was extended by a vast platform. Today, only the east and south faces are preserved (in part) and are still representative of the building. Despite the current state, three levels are identifiable. They were once separated by floors and the second floor was covered by a vault that has now collapsed. The thickness of the walls (1,40 m) seems to indicate that the tower must have risen to a height of fifteen meters. The defensive function is confirmed by the presence of arrow slits on the upper floor. From Melve, you can explore and admire the landscapes of the Haute-Provence Geopark.
