A large river that is both Alpine and Mediterranean, the Durance has its source in the Hautes Alpes, at an altitude of 2300 m, at the foot of Mont Chenaillet, a 150 million-year-old fossil oceanic volcano, near the Montgenèvre pass close to Italy.

The Durance, the emblematic river of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is a popular spot for outdoor sports.
Between fast-flowing rivers and calmer areas, it offers a wide range of activities: canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, swimming, or even hiking along its wild banks. Irrigated by Lake Serre-Ponçon, it winds through contrasting landscapes, between Alpine peaks and Provençal scrubland.
