The Annot Sandstone Site is a stunning world where cyclopean sandstone blocks, ancestral legends, and thousands of years of history mingle. Overlooking the village, an area of 150 hectares is now classified as a Sensitive Natural Area.
Description
Formed 35 million years ago, following underwater avalanches of mud and sand then carried to altitude, to the formation of the Alps, by fracturing and deforming, the Annot sandstones were then sculpted by erosion to become a spectacular rocky chaos.
The Mediterranean influence that softens our mountain climate, sandstone and marl that allow the existence of numerous springs, make the Annot sandstone a site of great floristic interest. The faults in the rock provide an ideal shelter for various species of bats. Finally, the presence of rock shelters, these semi-troglodyte dwellings also contribute to the great richness of this site.
Developments have been designed to preserve the ecological, geological and landscape richness of the site while promoting practice areas for climbers and hikers.
