The Valensole plateau is today one of the most important areas for the cultivation of lavender and lavandin. Cultivation also takes place on the Entrevennes plateau, in Puimichel, Le Castellet, Oraison, and Manosque.

Description

In a sometimes hilly landscape, you will find fields as far as the eye can see from around mid-June to mid-July. Flowering depends on the weather.

The Romans perfumed their baths and clothing with lavender and even placed sachets of lavender in their wardrobes while making vows of love. Introduced to France by the Phocaeans, it found its preferred land in Provence thanks to the climate that favored its productivity. Cultivation is now well developed and in the 20s we saw the emergence of lavandin, which has a higher yield and its essence production is up to ten times higher than that of traditional lavender.

Lavandin is a hybrid resulting from the cross-pollination of true lavender and aspic (wild lavender). It is a highly developed clump with a long, compact flower spike. The flowers are used in closets to repel insects, and the essential oil deodorizes the interior of homes. It is also used to perfume laundry detergents and soaps.
