Geological curiosity of more than 500 tons and a height of 5 meters, for a circumference of 30 meters, it is an erratic block composed of sandstone.
Description
Perched on a hill in the heart of the Blanche Valley, this impressive block of sandstone was transported by the glacier into the Seyne basin more than 20,000 years ago.
During the great glacial extensions of the late Quaternary period, the ice occupied the northern valleys of the current Haute-Provence Geopark. The Durance glacier descends to the gates of Sisteron and that of the Ubaye overflows on the left bank to fill the basins of Seyne and Turriers. Progressing through the Saint-Jean pass throughout the valley to the Maure and Fanget passes, the glacier reaches several hundred meters in thickness.
The Grosse Pierre is a geological curiosity, 5 meters high and 30 meters in circumference. This erratic block was transported by the glacier and abandoned here when it melted. It is an enormous piece of sandstone whose mass can be estimated at around 550 tons.
An easy marked walking trail (6 km starting from the Selonnet town hall square) will allow you to discover the block and its surroundings.
