Almost entirely destroyed by a devastating fire that claimed many lives, Colmars commemorates this tragedy in memory of its residents who lost their lives. A torchlight procession and a recounting of the fire mark this evening of remembrance.
Description
On Monday, August 8, 1672, around 9 or 10 o'clock in the evening, some residents returning to their homes noticed a large fire coming from the direction of the main church. They ran to the bells to ring in alarm and call for help; but the wind arose at such an inopportune moment that, despite the assistance offered by the inhabitants of the neighboring hamlets, the fire, spreading from street to street (which were very close together), engulfed the entire unfortunate town in flames in less than three or four hours. This event offers a chance to learn more about the rich history of Colmars-les-Alpes, which was deeply affected by this tragedy. It is usually celebrated on August 8th each year but will be postponed by a few days due to the Medieval Festival.
