Feast of Saint John the Baptist

The patronal feast of Saint John the Baptist is a tradition that has been perpetuated for generations and to which the people of Colmar are deeply attached. Despite some interruptions throughout its history, the celebration, which combines religious, military, and civil fraternities, has always endured and adapted. It has taken place every year on June 23, 24, and 25 since the first half of the 19th century.
The festivities were already being held in 1844, as they are mentioned by Abbé Féraud in his "Historical and Biographical Geography of the Basses-Alpes Department." The costumes, still worn today, represent many military corps that marked the Napoleonic Wars (around 1830). Saint-Jean in Colmars follows a regulated path, passed down through several generations.
The sequence and gestures are now proudly reproduced by the most recent arrivals. However, it should be noted that over time, some of these customs have obviously evolved. For example, it is no longer the penitents who carry the statue of Saint John, but rather the villagers or volunteers following the course of the festival. Similarly, the population is no longer called upon to elect the Captain of the Bravade. From now on, after consultation, the captain is chosen for several years from among the volunteers. Certain elements have also been added: laying of wreaths, traditional dance, wake-up call with fanfare at 7 a.m....
The celebration of Saint John the Baptist is therefore a tradition that knows how to evolve over time!
