5th century early Christian baptistery. Free access

Description

The ancient cathedral group of the 5th century

At the beginning of the 5th century, in the context of the Christianization of Roman Gaul, a vast basilica-type church accompanied by a baptistery was built on the outskirts of the town of Riez, on the southern slope of Colostre.

Two bishops from the monastery of Lérins, Saint Maximus and Saint Faustus, then played a major role in the evangelization and management of the local community.

The baptistery, generally used once a year during the Easter ceremony celebrated on Easter night, has survived the centuries. Remarkably preserved, it still offers its eight columns and immersion basin to be seen today.
